About this place
The site is geographically located on a Paleozoic tufaceous hill, surrounded to the E by the Riu Mannu. The Pani Loriga hill presents itself as a rich cultural stratification that documents the settlement continuity from the pre-Nuragic era (domus de janas necropolis) to the Punic one. BC, as evidenced by the ceramics found on the acropolis. This was located on the W side of the hill and was accessible from the S/E via a road connected to the base of the hill. Access to the acropolis through the external walls shows complex structures: on the E side of the fortification, living spaces were identified which, by increasing the wall thickness, constituted an additional defensive element. BC, it was located on a short tuff plateau along the S/W slopes of the hill; it was characterized more widely by pit burials, in which the rite of incineration was mainly practiced. The pits were mostly oblong in shape, and had a depth of about 30 cm; in rarer cases they were sub-rectangular in shape, deeper and provided with indentations on the long sides. The Punic necropolis was located on the N/W side, consisting of underground tombs dug into the tuff bank. There is also evidence of a hypogeum with a space in front of the chamber, perhaps with ritual value, and with a central pillar inside. Thanks to the grave goods that accompanied the bodies of the deceased, it was possible to date the necropolis between the 5th and 4th centuries. B. C. A place of worship, which has been identified with a tophet, even if the clues are completely generic, has been located E of the acropolis, on the other offshoot of the hill. 21-37; G. Our Story
A rich history
The favorable position ensured control of two ancient penetration routes that connected eastern Sulcis with the Cixerri valley and the Campidano of Cagliari. The settlement, one of the Phoenician colonies aimed at controlling the territory and exploiting the resources of the rich Sulcis hinterland, was founded between the second half and the end of the 7th century. The archaeological remains are not easily interpretable, but it seems identifiable around the edge of the hill a double wall of large blocks which incorporates a previous nuragic structure, the Diana nuraghe. The fortification contained a series of buildings that can be interpreted as a residential area, dating back to the 3rd century. B. C. The Phoenician necropolis, of which approximately 150 tombs have been excavated, dating back to the first years and the second half of the 6th century. A corridor, also dug into the rock, constituted the access to the burial chamber, in which the remains of the buried deceased were contained. Sometimes the burials were obtained from prehistoric hypogea, the so-called "domus de janas". History of the excavations Discovered in 1965 by Ferruccio Barreca, the site takes its name from the two owners of the was involved in several excavation campaigns by Giovanni Tore and Enrico Atzeni between 1968 and 1974. The excavations brought to light the acropolis and the Phoenician and Punic necropolises, of which numerous tombs were excavated. Bibliography F.
